Ready to lead with impact?

In this episode, I talk with Debby Reece, MS, PE, Senior Vice President of California Water Business at WSP in the U.S., about civil engineering project delivery. Discover her 30 years of experience managing civil, drainage, and stormwater disciplines for transportation and land development projects. This discussion provides practical insights for civil engineers and project managers on effective leadership, staff mentoring, and delivering complex infrastructure on time and on budget. Learn how to navigate design challenges and regulatory requirements while building well-rounded teams.

Here Are Some of the Questions We Ask Debby Reece, MS, PE:

  • What strategies ensure effective project planning, design development, and quality outcomes while maintaining schedule adherence?
  • How do stormwater quality, best management practices, and low impact development influence civil engineering designs?
  • What effective strategies facilitate coordination with multiple stakeholders and agencies during complex project delivery?
  • What technologies have significantly impacted and improved the project delivery process in civil engineering?
  • What key skill sets and traits distinguish the most effective project managers?
  • Do you practice any daily rituals that contribute to your professional success?
  • Is there a specific book, author, framework, or philosophy that has significantly influenced your career?
  • What essential career advice would you offer an up-and-coming civil engineer in a brief encounter?

Here Are Some of the Key Points Discussed About Expert Insights for Civil Engineering Project Delivery:

  • Successful project planning involves bringing together diverse perspectives, defining immediate milestones, and consistent communication to monitor progress. Quality outcomes are achieved by building time into the schedule for quality control, documenting processes, and sharing lessons learned across the entire team to support continuous improvement.
  • Regulations like the Clean Water Act and concepts like low impact development (LID) require a multidisciplinary approach to design, changing how engineers consider site layout and grading. These practices necessitate early integration of expert input and strategic placement of best management practices (BMPs) to manage runoff and preserve natural areas.
  • Effective coordination begins with a comprehensive project management plan that identifies all stakeholders and establishes clear communication protocols and meeting cadences. Utilize a stakeholder engagement kickoff meeting to align goals and implement tools like a RACI matrix and an issues escalation ladder to streamline decision-making and resolve conflicts efficiently.
  • Computer-aided design (CAD) revolutionized engineering by enabling complex computations and data visualization. Collaboration tools like Microsoft Teams and AI-powered assistants such as Co-Pilot enhance communication, streamline information sharing, and automate meeting summaries, significantly improving efficiency in distributed work environments.
  • Exceptional project managers possess strong communication and active listening skills, allowing them to gather input and weigh choices effectively. They are highly organized, maintain thorough documentation, and continuously monitor for changes, ensuring all decisions and project evolutions are tracked and managed proactively.
  • Begin each day with gratitude and a clear focus on a small, achievable success to set a positive perspective and ensure daily accomplishments. End the day by performing a ‘brain dump’ to offload tasks and thoughts, promoting better sleep and mental clarity for the following day.
  • Simon Sinek’s ‘Start With Why’ philosophy offers profound insights into human nature and the motivations behind actions. Understanding the fundamental ‘why’ can be applied across all business functions, greatly improving interactions with people and team dynamics.
  • Make connections by actively attending industry events, asking questions, and stepping out of your comfort zone by saying yes to new tasks. Building strong relationships, seeking help, and finding mentors or coaches are paramount for navigating and succeeding in the industry.

Understanding civil engineering project delivery is essential for professionals in the AEC industry looking to enhance their project outcomes and technical expertise.
